Police have arrested Sujit Pal, alias "Bachchan," a close associate of TMC councillor Sushanta Ghosh, in connection with allegations of large-scale extortion from street vendors in the Anandapur area. Tension erupted outside Anandapur Police Station following the arrest, with a section of the crowd allegedly hurling eggs and tomatoes at the accused as police escorted him out of the premises. He was later taken to court under heavy security arrangements.
According to police action linked to complaints filed in the area, several allegations have surfaced against TMC councillor Sushanta Ghosh, including extortion from hawkers, illegal collection of money, and unauthorized construction activities. Police launched a search operation after receiving complaints, but the councillor has not been located. His phone is reportedly switched off, and authorities are continuing efforts to trace him. Following the change in government, he resigned from his position as Chairman of Borough No. 12.
Police sources stated that a vehicle linked to the councillor was intercepted during a checkpoint operation while travelling toward the Odisha border. Family members of Sushanta Ghosh were reportedly inside the vehicle at the time. The driver was subsequently arrested and is also facing allegations, including extortion-related charges. Meanwhile, Sujit Pal was arrested from the Kolkata airport area and remains under investigation.
During a separate search of the councillor's office, authorities reportedly recovered several items, including a luxurious bedroom, a large bed, and an attached bathroom within the office premises. The discovery has drawn attention as investigators continue examining materials and facilities found during the search. Police are also continuing efforts to gather evidence related to the allegations and locate the absconding councillor.
